Well, here’s the my first blog post of the new season. The fixtures may not be out yet, and the pre-season friendlies aren’t even underway, but for Gillingham FC (and clubs up and down the country) their season starts right here as they look to rebuild their squads for the start of the new campaign.
And after what feels like an interminable wait (which actually hasn’t been that long), Gillingham have made their first new signing of the summer, in the form of defender Craig Armstrong.
Armstrong could justifiably be tagged a journeyman – after all, he has played for no less than ten clubs during his career to date. But throughout that career he’s been a solid, steady sort of player who hasn’t let anybody down. He might not fit into the “exciting” bracket, he may well be just the sort of player we need – someone to plug a gap in what’s been, let’s face it, a crap defence.
He’s the first, supposedly, of the 10-15 new arrivals promised by Paul Scally. While we shouldn’t be doing cartwheels in delight, we should be pleased that we’re beginning to make things happen in the transfer market.
Here’s to more of the same (and a few exciting players, too, eh?).
